Former Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Secretary General Eisenhower Mkaka, the man credited with steering the party from opposition benches to government power in 2020, has struck a tone of humility and resolve following the party’s return to opposition.
Reacting to the election outcome, Mkaka acknowledged the people’s verdict, saying Malawians had once again demonstrated their ability to bring about change when they desire it. “We are back in opposition. We take it with grace! Lessons learnt: you don’t take Malawians for granted, when they want change they will deliver it—this is true today or tomorrow!” Mkaka said.
Mkaka’s message carried both reflection and determination. He stressed that the MCP will not collapse under the weight of this setback but will instead rebuild itself, drawing lessons from the challenges faced in government. “We will build bigger and better, learning from the lessons,” he added, pointing to a renewed resolve to reconnect with the people and restore trust.
In a rare show of statesmanship, Mkaka extended best wishes to President-elect Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, signaling maturity in Malawi’s democratic process and highlighting the importance of peaceful transitions of power.
Political observers say Mkaka’s voice remains influential within the MCP. His calm acceptance of the results and call for rebuilding may serve as the first step in reshaping the party’s role in opposition and preparing it for future battles at the ballot box.
