The Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) central executive committee, convening today at Page House in Mangochi, has officially affirmed Grezelder Jeffrey’s appointment as vice president for the central region and Dr. Clement as the secretary-general. A statement recently issued and jointly signed by the party’s administrative secretary, Francis Mphepo, and spokesperson, Shadric Namalomba, additionally designates December 13, 2023, for a national governing council meeting at Nkopola in Mangochi.
These decisions are seen as efforts to undermine Jeffrey, whose role as Secretary General bestowed significant influence within the party. In response, Jeffrey has called for the DPP’s National Elective Convention on December 16, 2023, a move contested by the faction led by Peter Mutharika and associates. This faction aims to thwart Jeffrey and her group, which includes Nankhumwa.
All this is happening whilst the ruling Malawi Congress Party is growing from strength to strength so much so that it will not be surprising for Chakwera to renew his governing mandated again in 2025.
