Chaziya Secures Unopposed Victory in Lilongwe Chilobwe as MCP Tightens Grip on Central Region

Lilongwe, Malawi — In a resounding show of political strength, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has solidified its dominance in the Central Region, with Hon. Lawrence Chakakala Chaziya securing a decisive, unopposed victory in Lilongwe Chilobwe Constituency ahead of Malawi’s pivotal September 16, 2025 general elections.

According to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), no other party or independent candidate submitted nomination papers for the constituency by the official deadline of 4:00 PM on July 30. This development paves the way for Chaziya—making his maiden attempt at the parliamentary seat—to be declared duly elected without a contest, pending MEC’s final confirmation procedures as per Malawi’s electoral regulations.

The absence of challengers from major opposition parties such as the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), UTM, UDF, AFORD, People’s Party (PP), and independents has been interpreted as both a strategic retreat and an acknowledgement of MCP’s firm political foothold in the region. It also signals growing confidence in President Lazarus Chakwera’s leadership, as he seeks re-election in September for a second five-year term.

Political analysts cite Chaziya’s unopposed ascent as a reflection of the MCP’s sustained popularity and grassroots organizational strength, particularly in strategic zones such as Senior Chief Khongoni’s area in Kasiya and Malembo in Lilongwe. His visible involvement in development efforts has reportedly resonated well with local communities.

The MCP, under President Chakwera’s stewardship, continues to gain momentum across most parts of the country, and Chaziya’s walkover win is being seen as a bellwether for broader electoral trends in this year’s general election.

Congratulations are pouring in for Hon. Chaziya, whose unchallenged entry into Parliament marks both a personal political milestone and a symbolic victory for a party riding high on public confidence.
