In a remarkable turnaround, under the leadership of President Chakwera, the tobacco industry has regained its prominence as a key foreign exchange earner for the nation. Formerly dwindling under Peter Mutharika’s administration, tobacco now stands tall once more, reclaiming its rightful position as a cornerstone of Malawi’s economy.
The latest reports from the Tobacco Commission, as relayed by spokesperson Telephorus Chigwenembe, paint a picture of resounding success. Within a mere fortnight of the tobacco marketing season, Malawi has raked in a staggering $37 million from the sale of 14 million kilograms of tobacco. This remarkable achievement marks a twofold increase from the same period last year, where sales amounted to $16 million from 8.1 million kilograms of the “green gold.”
The swift resurgence of the tobacco sector is nothing short of astounding. With the marketing season only in its third week since its official opening on 15th April, Malawi is poised to emerge triumphant, poised to overcome the economic setbacks wrought by natural disasters and mismanagement from the previous administration.
