Chakwera’s Leadership Shines as Karonga Town Water Supply Project Nears Completion

Deputy Water Minister Inspecting Karonga Water Project

President Lazarus Chakwera’s transformative impact on Malawi is undeniable—though some may stubbornly refuse to acknowledge it. For those who prefer the truth, let the facts speak for themselves. The Karonga Town Water Supply Project, an ambitious initiative spearheaded by the Northern Region Water Board (NRWB), is now 99 percent complete, with Chakwera set to inaugurate it next month. The people of Karonga owe this monumental achievement to the President’s visionary leadership.

This $32 million project, funded by the OPEC Fund, BADEA, and the Malawi government, will dramatically increase the supply of clean, potable water for an estimated 184,000 residents. In a town where water demand has long outpaced supply, this is nothing short of a game-changer.

During an inspection by Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation Liana Kakhobwe, NRWB’s Operations and Projects Committee Chairperson Florence Nthakomwa revealed that the pipes are now undergoing disinfection, and the system is nearly ready to begin pumping. NRWB has laid 301 kilometers of new pipelines, upgraded the treatment plant to increase capacity from 12,000 to 31,000 cubic meters of water per day, installed 45 communal water points, and constructed three booster stations at Pusi, Mlare, and Bwiba. These upgrades will ensure that even rural communities have reliable access to clean water.

Additionally, NRWB has built a modern office in Karonga Town and is processing water connection applications for nearly 10,000 eager customers. Chakwera’s leadership has not just brought water to Karonga—it has delivered hope and progress for a brighter future.
