President Lazarus Chakwera has announced determined plans to establish a Chilembwe School of Excellence. The Malawi leader disclosed his plans during a commemorative address at the Providence Industrial Mission (PIM) in Chiradzulu today where the country was reflecting on the liberation struggle that Reverend John Chilembwe died fighting for during Malawi’s colonial era.
Speaking during the annual observance of Chilembwe Day, a day dedicated to honoring the legacy of the late Rev. John Chilembwe, President Chakwera emphasized the critical role education plays in empowering youth and enabling them to utilize Malawi’s abundant resources for economic growth. “The Chilembwe School of Excellence will serve as a beacon of hope for our children, helping them to acquire skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in our modern economy,” he stated.
According to President Chakwera, the proposed school will feature cutting-edge facilities, including a football academy for both boys and girls, and a state-of-the-art stadium equipped for various sports disciplines such as netball, basketball, volleyball, athletics, and boxing. The President sees these amenities as aiming not only to promote physical well-being but also to instill teamwork, discipline, and leadership skills among students.
Chakwera revealed that plans to attract investment for the school are already underway. “I recently engaged a group of investors from Italy who are preparing to contribute the necessary resources for the development of the Chilembwe School of Excellence here in Chiradzulu,” he announced, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with international partners to drive local development.
The President linked this educational initiative to his broader vision for Malawi, which includes creating Schools of Excellence in every district across the nation to bolster local knowledge and capability. He reiterated that education is a foundational pillar for national development and empowerment, encouraging the youth to embrace learning as a means of lifting themselves and their communities out of poverty.
Chakwera noted, “Our country is rich in natural resources and potential, and it is through education that we can realize our dreams and achieve sustainable development. By investing in our youth, we are investing in the future of Malawi.”
The announcement was met with enthusiasm from local community members and leaders who attended the event. Many expressed optimism about the positive long-term impact the school could have on the region and its potential to cultivate future leaders among young Malawians.
