CHAKWERA LOCKS DOWN CHITIPA – PRESIDENT CALLS FOR VOTES TO SECURE DEVELOPMENT MOMENTUM

Chitipa

President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has turned the political spotlight firmly on Chitipa, urging voters to back him and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in the September 16 General Elections to ensure the district — and the nation — stays on its current path of progress. Speaking at Chitipa Boma during a whistle-stop tour, the MCP leader made it clear that despite facing devastating natural disasters during his term, his administration has “continued to develop the country using modern technology” with major projects in roads, railway lines, schools, and hospitals, including the newly inaugurated Nthalire Community Hospital.

The rally was not just about promises — it was a show of strength and connection. MCP Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda hailed Chakwera’s decision to spend the night in Chitipa, a move that fully booked all local lodges and boosted business. He revealed the President has ordered the completion of terraces at Chitipa Stadium, ending an eight-year wait for Chitipa United to play at home. Senior Chief Mwabulambya called the visit “historic,” praising Chakwera as “a humble president” and the first sitting leader to ever sleep in the district.

With the North now rallying behind him, and the Central Region already a political fortress, Chakwera’s presence in Chitipa signals more than just campaign goodwill — it’s a tactical tightening of the MCP’s electoral grip. As the President pivots to the South in the coming weeks, the psychological pressure on the opposition is mounting. If this northern wave holds and spreads, the much-talked-about “50% plus one in the first round” may no longer be an ambition — it could be a done deal.
