President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera is increasingly being cast as a unique figure on Malawi’s political stage—one whose leadership is defined by perseverance, humility, compassion and a commitment to excellence.
Commenting on his character, political commentator Phinleys Obonyo Pinifolo noted that “Chakwera’s knowledge of biblical scriptures, such as Isaiah 60:22, likely instilled in him the confidence that he would one day become a state president, despite facing setbacks.”
Unlike many of his contemporaries, Chakwera has been praised for his tolerance and calmness even in the face of provocation. Pinifolo observed that, “He remains calm in the face of insults and belittling, choosing not to lose his temper or become bitter. Instead, he maintains a cheerful demeanor, even towards his opponents.”
Analysts point to Chakwera’s composure towards his vice president Michael Usi—who has openly accused his administration of corruption—as proof of his presidential temperament. “Despite his vice president making allegations, Chakwera continues to show respect towards him. This trait is reminiscent of God’s patience and slow anger, giving people time to improve,” Pinifolo remarked.
The president’s emotional depth has also been on display during national tragedies. He broke down upon learning of the death of Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima and again at Chilima’s state funeral. According to observers, this revealed his human side and empathy—qualities that set him apart in Malawian politics.
Humility remains another striking trait. Chakwera has been seen kneeling before ordinary citizens, traditional leaders and church leaders alike. Pinifolo argued this represents “servant leadership and a commitment to service that is rare in Malawi’s politics.”
Chakwera’s presidency has also been marked by visible development, particularly in infrastructure. His administration has pushed for “high-standard roads and bridges, surpassing previous efforts,” Pinifolo said, describing this as a hallmark of his pursuit of excellence.
On the political front, Chakwera has been applauded for his clean campaigns devoid of insults. “His political campaigns are characterized by smart strategies and a lack of insults towards opponents. When he critiques others, it is based on specific, critical points,” Pinifolo stressed.
As Malawi heads toward the September 16 general election, analysts say the president stands out for blending spirituality, compassion and professionalism with a drive for excellence—an image that casts him as presidential in a field crowded with politicians.
