Chakwera Goes on Holiday, MCP Chooses Transparency

President Lazarus Chakwera

The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has confirmed that its President, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, who is also the former Head of State, has gone on holiday outside the country. There is nothing unusual or suspicious about this.

For five solid years as President of the Republic, Dr. Chakwera worked without taking a proper holiday. He carried the burden of office through difficult times, leading the country through economic and political challenges. Now, as a private citizen and party leader, he has chosen to rest. That is both reasonable and human.

What stands out is the transparency. The MCP has openly told Malawians where its President is and why he has travelled. There is no secrecy, no confusion, and no attempt to insult the intelligence of the public.

This openness stands in sharp contrast to the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). When the DPP president disappears from the public eye, Malawians are merely told he has gone on a “private trip” to South Africa, sometimes for weeks on end. No explanation. No clarity. Just silence, while speculation fills the gap.

Malawians are not children. Given the advanced age of the DPP leader, it is natural for people to ask questions. Instead of hiding behind vague statements, why can’t the truth be told plainly? Transparency builds trust; secrecy breeds suspicion.

Dr. Chakwera’s holiday should not be politicised. Leaders, past or present, are entitled to rest. The real issue is honesty with the people. On this matter, the MCP has shown respect to Malawians by being open and straightforward.

If others choose to hide behind half-truths, that is their decision. But they should not be surprised when the public begins to ask harder questions.
