In a bold move that signals President Lazarus Chakwera’s commitment to easing the economic strain on Malawians, the government has delivered a 20% salary increase for civil servants. Amid skyrocketing inflation—fueled by opposition tactics—the administration has shown it’s not just listening but acting swiftly.
After tense negotiations between the Government Negotiating Team (GNT) and the Civil Servants Trade Union (CSTU), a breakthrough was reached yesterday. GNT chairperson Charles Kalemba and CSTU secretary-general Titha Gomani confirmed the deal, which includes a 20% salary bump effective April 1, 2025, with an average hike of 18%.
Gomani also revealed that transport and special allowances have surged by 50%, while leave grants will rise between 10% and 40%, offering much-needed relief to government workers struggling under economic pressure.
Chakwera’s administration is making moves—and the civil servants are here for it.
