His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, officiated the pass-out parade for newly trained recruits of the Malawi Prison Service at Mapanga in Blantyre. The ceremony took place today at Mapanga in Blantyre.
During his address, President Chakwera highlighted the often-overlooked importance of the prison service in maintaining societal order and fostering rehabilitation among offenders. He shed light on the challenges faced by the Malawi Prison Service, appealing to the nation to recognize the vital role prisons play in upholding justice and promoting civic responsibility.
“This is not merely a job; it is a serious obligation to uphold the law and to contribute positively to our society. The prison environment must act as a place of reform, not just punishment,” President Chakwera stressed. He voiced his concern over the lack of public awareness regarding the critical functions of the correctional system and called for collective efforts to support law enforcement.
Citing recent incidents of lawlessness and land disputes, the President lamented the growing culture of impunity that concerns many Malawians. “If we continue to disregard the law, we jeopardize our nation’s progress. We must all commit to the respect and enforcement of our laws,” he urged.
In an effort to modernize and strengthen the prison system, the President shared that his government has introduced new legislative measures aimed at reforming correctional practices. He announced plans for a revised legal framework to ensure prisons serve as facilities for education and rehabilitation rather than mere detention centers.
“The enactment of a new law will help to renew our commitment to improving the conditions of our prisons, focusing on human rights and rehabilitation,” Chakwera stated, calling on Parliament to prioritize this initiative.
In closing, the President extended his gratitude to the recruits for their dedication and commitment to serving the country. “Congratulations to each of you for your achievement today. Your work is invaluable as you embark on this journey to contribute to our national safety and justice system,” he affirmed.
The event was attended by various dignitaries, including senior government officials, military personnel, and members of the judiciary, all united in a shared vision of a safer and just Malawi.
