Such is the prevailing narrative echoed by seasoned political pundits who predict that the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is poised for triumph in the forthcoming 2025 electoral showdown, fueled by its relentless expansion and bolstered by the formidable force of incumbency.
In a seismic shift that sent shockwaves reverberating through the country’s political landscape yesterday, three illustrious stalwarts of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and one luminary from the People’s Party (PP) have defected to the ranks of the MCP, ushering in a surge of numerical supremacy, emboldening the party’s morale and igniting a blaze of confidence in its prospects.
Among the illustrious quartet making the historic leap are Ralph Mhone, erstwhile Vice President of the People’s Party, Ephraim Mganda Chiume, former Vice Secretary General of the DPP, Miriam Chimbalanga, former Director of Women for the DPP, and the esteemed Member of Parliament for Chitipa South constituency under the DPP banner, Welani Chilenga.
The exodus from the DPP signals a damning indictment of Peter Mutharika’s lackluster leadership, rendering the party increasingly bereft of allure and shedding members like autumn leaves in the wake of a tempest.
As if this is not enough for the DPP, January bore witness to the expulsion of eminent figures from the Party’s Central Executive Committee, including the former Vice President for the Southern Region, Kondwani Nankhumwa, former Secretary General Grizelder Jeffrey, and former Director of Women Cecilia Chazama on frivolous grounds.
