AFORD reclaiming North lost glory?

Chihana

Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) was once the leading party in the north but due to political incursions by ruling parties as compounded by the impotent leadership of Chafufwa Chihana, the party was just reduced to its name. It saw members of Parliament declining, now to two.

However, it appears Chihana has found the much-needed political bearing. Though he is embroiled in a corruption scandal at the National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA), politically, it appears he is striking good chords.

Chihana has conducted a well-patronized rally in Rumphi and was recently on an offensive charm mission in Chitipa and Karonga meeting former political heavyweights and Lawyer Bazuka Mhango for inspiration. On this trip, Chihana donated K150 000 each to Chitipa United and Karonga United football clubs towards their club licensing registration fee to the Football Association of Malawi.

The donation was made in Chitipa on Thursday where Chihana went for a series of meetings. On Saturday, the Aford president made a similar donation to Karonga United, saying the two teams are struggling financially.

Speaking after receiving the money, Chitipa United youth Representative Moses Mtambo said the team needed the money before the Friday deadline.

“We had no hope; hence, taking the begging bowel here and fortunately, we have been bailed out of the situation,” he said.

What Chihana is doing, if he intensifies coupled with good strategy, the north may return to its original tent and be the political voice of the people from the north.
