EU Members of Parliament visit Malawi for international relations tour

Members of the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs landed in Malawi today for a two-day work errand in the country to discuss on collaboration amid geopolitical shifts on the global scene. Top issues included international and regional peace and security issues of shared interest.

The delegation, consisting of five Members of the European Parliament, has been led by David McAllister, Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs from the European People’s Party (EPP) in Germany.

While in Lilongwe, the delegation has met with Malawi’s government officials. The delegation, which was accompanied by members of the delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Malawi, began their tour duty with a courtesy call on the Speaker of Parliament, Right Honourable Catherine Gotani Hara before proceeding to meet other Government officials.

The meeting with the Head of the Legislature discussed areas that the Parliaments of Europe and Malawi are already collaborating on, which include the Inter-Pares Programme, Kuima Programme and the Democratic Governance Programme among others.

The meeting further discussed how the two Parliaments can further strengthen the EU-Malawi partnership based on shared values, principles and interests.

After concluding the Malawi visit tomorrow when they are scheduled to interface with other key Government officials including Minister of Foreign Affairs, the delegation will on December 20 leave for Lusaka Zambia for another two-day tour that will wrap up on December 21.
The tour in Zambia, is expected to be on exchanging perspectives on geopolitical and regional matters within the framework of Zambia’s chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Security, and Defence, Troika.
