The Deputy Secretary General of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), also serving as the Speaker of Parliament, Catherine Gotani Hara, has reassured the residents of Lilongwe South Constituency about the government’s commitment to various development initiatives. These projects include the commencement of the construction of a tarmac ring road from Chigwirizano to Chileka via Phirilanjuzi and Ndaula, scheduled to begin in January 2024.
Speaking at a public rally organized by the Member of Parliament for the area, Peter Dimba, at Phirilanjuzi Primary School Ground, Hara emphasized that the Chakwera Administration recognizes the economic challenges faced by the people. In response, the government is implementing measures such as social cash transfers and public works programs to alleviate suffering.
Addressing the crowd, Minister of Gender and Social Welfare, Jean Sendeza, announced plans for food distribution during the lean season. She disclosed that the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) would soon initiate food distribution, and the number of social cash transfer beneficiaries has been increased to 600,000 to support the ultra-poor in overcoming economic difficulties. Dimba expressed gratitude to the government for initiating the tarmac ring road project from Chigwirizano, Malingunde, Phirilanjuzi, Ndaula, up to Chileka.
“The community here is excited about the two projects…the ring road construction which commences in January and the the water project which will enable people to enjoy tap water for the first time in 40 years,” Dimba said.
During the function, Dimba and Hara dished out cash prizes to over 20 teams that competed in the Peter Dimba K5 Million Football League.
