Order, discipline, and vision have been restored to Malawi’s energy sector under President Lazarus Chakwera’s leadership. The era of blackouts, attributed to incompetence and corrupt practices during the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regime, has been replaced with a more efficient and transparent system. Malawians endured prolonged power outages during the DPP’s rule, marked by the misuse of generators and fuel theft by top officials. However, the current administration has successfully addressed these challenges, providing the population with a more reliable electricity supply.
In a significant development, Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola inaugurated the construction of a 10-megawatt solar power plant by EGENCO on Wednesday. This initiative marks a crucial step toward expanding the country’s electricity generation capacity. The solar power plant, will situate along the Lilongwe-Salima Road on a 100-hectare piece of land, is part of EGENCO’s ambitious plan to generate a total of 50 megawatts. To fully address the issue of load-shedding and improve electricity accessibility, experts suggest that Malawi needs to generate a minimum of 1000 megawatts.
