All indications are that President Chakwera is taking the Mega Farms initiative seriously.
Soon after participating in the official opening of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, President Chakwera and his envoy proceeded to the Clinton Global Initiative annual event for multi-sectoral deliberations on food insecurity and building resilient food systems.
In that meeting, President Chakwera lobbied the audience to invest in Malawi’s agriculture sector, sharing with them the great potential that his Government has installed in the sector in view of the commercialization drive characterized by mechanized and large scale irrigation schemes.
Food security was among the thematic areas of focus that the Secretary-General of the UNGA, His Excellency António Guterres, focused on in his opening address today. Other thematic areas highlighted by Guterres include climate change management, renewable technologies, peace and security, as well as water and sanitation, calling on all nations to a greater collaboration and predictable funding.
Deduced from his dedicated launching of the initiative back home this year, there is no missing of President Chakwera’s message that he is up to deliver on his promise about mega farms in the country.
Malawi’s dedicated desire, however, to achieve this dream requires innumerable resources for large scale implementation.
This explains why President Chakwera appears relentless in coaxing and inviting development partners and investors into the initiative.
