President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera on Friday departed Lilongwe for New York, United States of America, where he will participate in the 78th UN General Assembly.
Addressing the audience before his departure at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe, President Chakwera emphasized that the UN General Assembly provides Malawi with a chance to assess the advancements made in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
He said: “This UN General Assembly gives us an opportunity to review where we are in terms of the Sustainable Development Goals.”
President Chakwera additionally mentioned that during his trip to the United States, he intends to advocate for support from international partners to aid Malawi in its reconstruction efforts following the extensive damage caused by Cyclone Freddy earlier this year.
“On the sidelines of this great UN General Assembly we want to focus on Malawi’s reconstruction,” said President Chakwera
During his time in the United States, President Chakwera will undertake various official duties. As per the communication from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Chakwera is scheduled to deliver speeches at the UN Sustainable Development Goals Summit Meeting and the Millennium Challenge Cooperation Compact Meeting on Monday, September 18.
On September 19, the Malawi Head of State will participate in the African Investment Forum Meeting, followed by his attendance at the Democracy Delivers Summit on Wednesday, September 20.
The theme for this year’s UN General Assembly is “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating Action on the 2030 Agenda and its Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all”.
