Few days ago, local news reported that the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has commenced investigations into Football Association of Malawi’s (Fam) sponsorship of a nomination paper presentation ceremony by the presidential candidate of the then ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on Malawi Broadcasting Corporation Television (MBCTV).
The ACB Principal Public Relations Officer Egrita Ndala confirming the investiations said ’’The Anti-Corruption Bureau is conducting investigations with regards to sponsorship of a political program by Football Association of Malawi. We may not give further details at this point’’ whereas MBC Public Relations and Customer Affairs Manager Chisomo Mwamadi also confirmed the development saying ’’We are aware of the investigations and ACB has been in touch with us. We will not comment further,’’ Mwamadi said.
For starters, this sponsorship happened in the build up to the 2019 Tripartite Elections. The question people are asking is why FAM decided to sponsor only the DPP live broadcast during that nomination paper presentation period and not that of MCP or Mbakuwaku?
If proved that FAM engaged in that partisan act, then it is a new low that FAM under Walter Nyamilandu stooped. I mean APM was the head of state then and needed no one to sponsor him to be live on TV. What was Nyamilandu trying to achieve? Surely if it turns out that FAM sponsored the live broadcast presentation of the nomination papers, then surely the law must take its due course.
