Malawi Court Blocks DSTV Tariff Hike Amid MACRA Challenge

MACRA boss Suleman

The High Court in Blantyre has issued a temporary court order, or injunction, which prevents Multichoice Malawi from implementing any changes or adjustments to the tariffs of DSTV (Digital Satellite Television) subscriptions. This decision comes after the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) sought legal action against Multichoice Malawi.

According to a statement signed by MACRA’s Director General, Daud Suleman, the injunction will remain in effect until a judicial review concerning this matter is completed. This means that Multichoice Malawi is prohibited from applying the new tariffs they announced in a letter dated 17 July 2023. The proposed changes were supposed to take effect from 1 August 2023.

For instance, as per the new tariffs, subscribers to DSTV Compact would have been required to pay K33,000, which is an increase from the current K27,300 they are paying. However, due to the court’s injunction, these changes will not be implemented until the legal review process is concluded.
