President of the Republic of Malawi, Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera today, made a generous donation of over 100 Million Kwacha to several Malawian universities during a function held at Kamuzu Palace.
The universities that benefited from this donation include the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), University of Malawi (UNIMA), Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST), and Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR). The funds were contributed through the Presidential Charity Initiative.
In his speech during the donation ceremony, President Chakwera emphasized the importance of providing a good start to individuals. He drew inspiration from Tabitha Chawinga, a renowned Malawian footballer, who achieved great success due to the support she received from her parents at an early age. President Chakwera highlighted the significance of nurturing potential, talent, and skill through providing opportunities, resources, freedom, and encouragement to young people.
The President’s Charity initiative aims to support different initiatives in the country. President Chakwera recognizes the enormous need for such support and considers it a crucial investment in the development of the nation. He expressed his commitment to raising additional resources through the Charity to address the significant demand for educational assistance. The President believes that empowering talented youth with quality education can greatly contribute to self-reliance and nation-building.
During his speech, President Chakwera commended the leadership of the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) for their innovative approach to ensuring students’ education is not solely dependent on donations. They have established an endowment and wisely invested resources to make the University self-reliant and sustainable in the long run. President Chakwera directed the Minister of Education to engage with the leadership of all public universities to adopt similar mechanisms, thus enhancing the self-sustainability of tertiary education in the country.
The President emphasized that while donations are necessary, they should be accompanied by sustainable approaches to generate resources. This approach will guarantee all young people a good start in their educational journey, regardless of individual donations. President Chakwera concluded by wishing the beneficiaries of the donation success in their studies, as they prepare to become productive citizens who will, in turn, contribute to the development of others.
