Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera may have his weaknesses but uniting the nation and not encouraging divisions in the society is one strength you cannot take away from. He invited former Presidents to mull the Cyclone Freddy situation and how they could be of help in alleviating the suffering of the people. Former Presidents Bakili Muluzi and Joyce Banda showed up. Only the egoistic Peter Mutharika declined to show up only to show claiming the situation was for technocrats and politicians to solve only to nicodemusly send a report to the United Nations Development Programme on how to deal with the situation. Very hypocritical like Nicodemus.
The above notwithstanding, President Chakwera now has gone ahead to give permission to the two former Presidents, who are his goodwill ambassadors for Tigwirane Manja, President Lazarus Chakwera’s cyclone Freddy rehabilitation project, to commence a project of building homes for the survivors.
Ten homes will be built in the initial phase of the initiative, which the two President’s launched at Mulanje’s Traditional Authority Njema. In the impacted districts, it is expected that at least 136 two- and three-bedroom homes will be built.
Cyclone Freddy left 25, 000 houses destroyed in Mulanje alone, where 151 people died, 217 still missing, and 147 injured.
