Chakwera’s Attendance of King Charles Coronation Yields Aid for Malawi

Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera meets Scottish Prime Minister on the sidelines of King Charles Coronation in England

Yesterday (6 March, 2022), the Scottish Government donated to Malawi Government a sum of £400,000 meant to support recovery from a devastating Cyclone Freddy which left Malawi agriculture output projections greatly diminished and threatening national food insecurity.

The Scottish Government has pledged a further £236,000 meant to assist in the health sector particularly in the flood-devastated catchment where cholera, among other diseases, has reportedly prevailed.

Due to the tropical disaster, thousands of people were displaced by severe flooding while agriculture fields were washed away particularly in the southern region including some parts of eastern region.

When President Chakwera left for England to honour a royal invitation extended to Malawi for the historical event of King Charles’ coronation, he highlighted to the nation that he will seize the trip to conduct business with bilateral and multilateral partners to advance interests of Malawi.

In his numerous meeting with several development partners, President Chakwera appealed for assistance to Malawi and Scotland, which falls within the territory ruled by King Charles’ monarchy, responded with the donation tagged to support the cyclone Freddy survivors.

Apart from that, the Scotland has been helping Malawi in areas of Health so that people here are able to access Covid- 19 vaccine. That is why having this in mind, barely hours after witnessing the coronation of King Charles lll on Saturday, President Chakwera held bilateral discussions with the newly- elected Scottish First Minister- Humza Yousaf.

During the discussion, the Malawi leader expressed hope for a continued cordial relationship between the two countries. The Malawi leader acknowledged the good relationship which has existed between the two countries and expressed hope that the ties will grow stronger and resilient because the First Minister has a better understanding of Malawi.

The First Minister visited Malawi in 2014 when he was Minister of External Affairs and International Development. According to an update on President Chakwera’s official Facebook page, the Malawi leader further expressed gratitude to the Scottish government for its pledge and support for Cyclone Freddy victims and cholera outbreak respectively.
