Mzuzu Court acquits 10 police officers who were arrested for allegedly aiding illegal immigrants

MZUZU-The Senior Resident Magistrate Court in Mzuzu has acquitted 10 police officers who were charged of aiding illegal immigrants.

The officers from Mzuzu Police Station were interdicted to answer the charge, a case which happened in August last year.

Senior Resident Magistrate Patrick Khamisi said the State failed to provide evidence justifying that the officers facilitated trafficking in of persons, who were illegal immigrants.

A lot of illegal immigrants have been arrested this year, many of them from Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.

In September Police in Dowa arrested 50 Ethiopian nationals who were travelling in two minibuses after leaving Dzaleka Refugee Camp.

Police in Mzimba arrested 29 Ethiopian nationals in August for entering Malawi illegally while in the capital Lilongwe 30 Ethiopians were arrested on 24 September for illegal entry into the country.
