Lilongwe — Some of Malawi’s most popular musicians will perform this afternoon at BICC Malawi Square for the grand finale of a music competition supporting President Lazarus Chakwera’s 2025 election campaign.
The competition, called “Dolo ndi amene amavotera Dr Lazarus Chakwera” (The real champion is the one who votes for Chakwera), has brought together well-known artists like Dan Lu, Nkasa, and Mlaka Maliro. These musicians have created songs to help build support for the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) as the country moves closer to the 16 September presidential election.
President Chakwera recently spoke at a rally in Mchinji where he advised the musicians to use their talent wisely.
“Please do not use your music to insult or attack other politicians like Peter Mutharika,” he said. “Let your songs bring people together and give them hope.”
The MCP says this music competition is part of its plan to reach young people and voters across the country in a peaceful and creative way. Many people have welcomed the idea, but some have warned that music should not be used to create political division.
Today’s event will include live performances and the announcement of winners. Organisers say the goal is to celebrate talent and encourage people to take part in building the country through peaceful democratic participation.
As the campaign continues, music is proving to be one of the most powerful tools to connect with voters.
