As Malawi inches closer to the official start of the election campaign period, Member of Parliament for Chikwawa North and Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Owen Chomanika, has urged political supporters in his constituency to maintain peace and unity.
Chomanika, who is also a senior member of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), called on party followers to be role models by refraining from violence and promoting tolerance in the political season.
“Politics should not divide us,” he said. “We must understand that, ultimately, only one leader will be elected. Let us respect each other and preserve harmony in our communities.”
Echoing his sentiments, MCP official Grace Kaliati, speaking in Mpotadzingwe within Mwamphanzi area, warned against political violence, stressing that it often leads to injuries and even loss of life—only for the perpetrators to regret it when voters abandon them.
Kaliati urged local political leaders to lead by example, calling on them to discourage violence as the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) prepares to launch the official campaign period.
