Malawi Government Warns Against Fake Reports on President Chakwera’s Travel Plans

Others to be his runningmate

Lilongwe — The Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) has strongly dismissed a widely circulated document on social media alleging that President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera is set to travel to Italy, calling the report false, misleading, and potentially harmful.

Speaking in a press briefing, OPC spokesperson Robert Kalindiza described the document — which purports to be an official government notice — as entirely fake. He clarified that such matters fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is mandated to officially communicate any international travel by the Head of State.

“No such travel has been confirmed, and should there be any plans, the Malawian public will be informed through the appropriate and formal government channels,” Kalindiza stated firmly.

He further urged citizens to exercise caution and responsibility, especially when sharing information online. “Spreading fake news, especially about the President, is not only reckless but dangerous. It undermines public trust and creates unnecessary confusion,” he warned.

The OPC emphasized that respect for the nation’s leadership and adherence to truth are vital for national unity and stability. The public is being encouraged to verify information through official government platforms and avoid being swayed by unverified social media posts.

As Malawi navigates both internal and external challenges, authorities say misinformation — especially about the President — has no place in responsible civic discourse.
