President Chakwera Pledges National Arts & Heritage Council for Malawi’s Youth

President Chakwera

Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the arts and cultural sector, promising the establishment of the National Arts and Heritage Council of Malawi (NAHEC). Speaking at the Youth State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Mzuzu, Chakwera responded to a youth representative’s query by confirming that NAHEC will be established following the passage of the National Arts and Heritage Bill on September 13, 2024.

The creation of the council marks a pivotal step in promoting and preserving Malawi’s cultural and creative sectors. “The establishment of NAHEC is set to drive job creation, boost tourism, and ensure the safeguarding of Malawi’s rich cultural heritage,” the President stated.

Chakwera emphasized that the council will tackle pressing issues faced by the country’s creative community, particularly in terms of resource mobilization. Through NAHEC, artists will have greater access to grants, equipment, and production resources, creating a more supportive environment for artistic growth. The initiative is aimed at not only preserving Malawi’s heritage but also stimulating economic development through the cultural sector.
