The ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has announced that its primary elections will be conducted in two phases, starting in February, with voting done through secret ballot.
This announcement comes as the country prepares for the general elections in September, which will include the election of councilors, Members of Parliament, and the President.
According to the party’s publicity secretary, Jessie Kabwira, primaries in constituencies with incumbent Members of Parliament will be held in mid-April, while those in constituencies without sitting MPs will take place in mid-February.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Kabwira, said that the party aims to select candidates based on the preferences of the electorate, ensuring they are not imposed as part of the party’s strategy to secure 50+1 votes in the upcoming general elections.
Various stakeholders, including the National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) and political experts, have called for political parties to conduct fair and free elections.
