In an enthusiastic address at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre, President Lazarus Chakwera praised the significant strides made by Malawi’s NGO sector over the past year.
Speaking at the commemoration of NGO Day which he hosted, the President celebrated the NGO sector’s remarkable growth, pointing to statistics that reveal a substantial increase in registered organizations and compliance with regulatory standards. He highlighted the doubling of registered NGOs from 77 in 2023 to 148 in 2024.
With NGO registrations rising from 77 to 148 in one year and annual report submissions increasing from 432 to 498, the President noted that this upward trajectory reflects a sector focused on accountability. He particularly commended NGOs for submitting more annual reports and renewing their licenses, signifying a strong commitment to transparency.
The President’s address encouraged NGOs to continue their commitment to transparency and to work closely with the NGO Regulatory Authority (NGORA) to enhance service delivery across the nation. On his part, the President reaffirmed his government’s commitment to localizing development, urging NGOs to collaborate and build local capacities to achieve sustainable development goals.
During the gathering, the Malawi leader officially launched the 2024 NGO Sector Report, a document that highlights the significant developments and achievements in the NGO landscape over the past year.
