The story of Norman Paulos Chisale, ex-bodyguard of former President Peter Mutharika, is about to take a significant turn on July 30th, 2024. The Chief Resident Magistrate Court has set the date to deliver its ruling on Chisale’s criminal matter involving the use of a stolen certificate to join the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) in 1996.
According to the details revealed during his prosecution, Chisale is accused of using a Junior Certificate of Education (JCE) certificate belonging to one Pythias Hiwa, to gain entry into the MDF.
Hiwa, who testified during the prosecution as state witness, stated that he had gone for MDF interviews in 1996 but was not recruited. It was later revealed to him that Chisale was using his certificate. Hiwa further claimed that Chisale had visited his village and demanded the certificate, stating that it would be used to recruit Hiwa into the army. However, Hiwa never received his certificate back.
The case gained more attention when Hiwa met Chisale in Lilongwe in 2012, and Chisale later visited Hiwa’s house while Hiwa was away, but his wife reported that the visit by Chisale appeared to be not in good faith.
This fake certificate saga is not the only legal battle Chisale is facing. He is also embroiled in a separate case involving money laundering charges.
