Some disgruntled staff members of the Immigration Department have declared their intent to go ahead with an industrial action, targeting the removal of Director General Charles Kalumo for his perceived mediocrity. In a statement circulating on social media, the dissatisfied workers have alerted three airlines—Malawi Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, and Kenya Airways—about the forthcoming protest.
Dated June 5, 2024, the letter has also been sent to the Malawi Revenue Authority, the Transporters Association of Malawi, and all travel agents. It warns that Immigration Department employees will cease work on Thursday if the Ministry of Homeland Security does not address their grievances by the close of business today.
Reads the notice: “You are therefore advised that there shall be no Immigration services in all formations including, and importantly so, all airports. Take note that we shall note hesitate to announce resumption of services once our concerns are addressed.”
In an interview this evening, the group’s spokesperson, Charles Chisi, confirmed that they will proceed with the strike, citing the lack of response from the government.
Government officials have not yet commented on the situation.
