Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera yesterday welcomed Mozambique’s Ambassador Alexandre Herculano Manjate at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, where Manjate presented his letters of credence. Speaking to journalists afterward, Manjate conveyed his enthusiasm for forging a robust partnership between Malawi and Mozambique, emphasizing the potential for increased trade, transportation, and energy collaboration through the Malawi-Mozambique electricity interconnection. He highlighted that this alliance will create significant opportunities for both nations to enhance integrated business among their communities.
Representing President Chakwera, presidential spokesperson Anthony Kasunda reaffirmed the president’s dedication to bolstering relations with Mozambique. Kasunda noted that maintaining strong ties with Mozambique is crucial for Malawi’s economy, particularly in trade and transportation of goods, as well as in the agricultural sector, where Malawi relies on Mozambican ports for fertilizer transport.
“Mozambique and Malawi have been in bilateral relations for quite a long time and, as we all know, Malawi is a landlocked country and, as such, it relies on Mozambican ports to receive goods from other countries hence the need to strengthen the bond,” Kasunda said.
