Malawi Pres. Chakwera revamps Agriculture as one Bale of tobacco fetches MK800,000

Tobacco fetching higher rice in Malawi

Amidst the bustling atmosphere of Chinkhoma Auction Floors in Kasungu, Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera resounded like thunder, championing the cause of the nation’s tobacco farmers. With a keen eye on the economic contributions of these farmers, President Chakwera emphasized the importance of protecting them from exploitation by tobacco buyers. Asserting his commitment to their welfare, he declared, “I will champion the cause of our farmers, recognizing their pivotal role in the realization of Malawi 2063’s vision for an independent middle-income economy.”

In a heartening turn of events, recent reports from the auction floors reveal promising tidings, with a single bale of tobacco fetching an impressive MK800,000.

As for Agriculture Minister Sam Kawale, this surge in prices is attributed to the implementation of effective governmental policies aimed at enhancing tobacco leaf production. He cited the recent legislative reforms in the tobacco sector.

“The removal of certain restrictions has incentivized farmers to increase their tobacco cultivation,” he explained.

“Last season’s favorable prices were a testament to the fruitful collaboration between the government and buyers, and we anticipate similar outcomes this season.

Up to this point, President Chakwera and Minister Kawale have rightfully earned the privilege to indulge in a sumptuous dinner of their preference, courtesy of this publication, as a token of appreciation for their commendable efforts. Isn’t this precisely why citizens entrust governments with authority?
