Incontestably, the legacy of housing provision for our uniformed personnel traces back to the visionary stewardship of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) regime under Kamuzu Banda. Regrettably, subsequent administrations, spanning the tenures of UDF, DPP, PP, and another stint of DPP governance under Peter Mutharika, allowed these crucial accommodations to languish in neglect—until the advent of Lazarus Chakwera.
Under Chakwera’s leadership, a remarkable resurgence is underway, epitomized by an ambitious nationwide initiative to construct thousands of residences for our dedicated men and women in uniform. This commitment was on Monday on full display when President Chakwera visited the Engineering Battalion of the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) in Kasungu, where over 100 houses are rapidly taking shape under the adept craftsmanship of Fidelis Construction and Castle Construction companies.
The President, visibly impressed by the progress and caliber of the housing projects, voiced his contentment during the tour. With most dwellings nearing an impressive 80 percent completion rate, they are slated for handover within a mere fortnight.
In an unprecedented show of commitment to our security agencies, the Chakwera government is spearheading the construction of 4,000 homes for the MDF and an additional 4,000 for the Malawi Police Service. Moreover, the Immigration and Prison Departments are each slated to receive 1,000 residences, underscoring the holistic approach to bolstering our national security infrastructure.
