The Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services has refuted rumors circulating on social media platforms claiming that Malawi passports currently in production are encountering acceptance issues at certain airports.
In an official statement released by the National Public Relations Officer, Wellington Chiponde, the department unequivocally denies these allegations.
During an interview with local media outlets, Chiponde emphasized that spreading such false information constitutes an offense and is subject to legal repercussions.
Chiponde further emphasized that these baseless rumors have the potential to jeopardize the safety and security of Malawian travelers abroad.
He reassured the public that all passports issued by the department adhere to the rigorous international standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for regulating aviation standards worldwide.
“The public may as well wish to know that the passport printing services being provided by the Department in Lilongwe include the issuance of Ordinary, Minor, Service and Diplomatic passports, all of which are recognised and accepted in every country across the globe,” he said.
Chiponde confirmed that the department has not received any reports of Malawian passports being rejected by scanners or agents anywhere.
“As a public service provider, the Department is committed to facilitating the ease of movement for Malawians around the world in line with international best practices.
“The department however commends the patriotic citizens who brought these false rumours to our attention,” said Chiponde.
