Battle for MCP Secretary General: Mkaka Faces Quartet Challengers

In the upcoming Malawi Congress Party national elective convention scheduled for August 8 to 10, the battle for the coveted position of Secretary General promises to be an epic showdown, with a staggering four contenders poised to challenge the incumbent, Eisenhower Mkaka. This fiercely contested race stands as a pivotal test of Mkaka’s standing within the party’s ranks.

As per revelations obtained by The Shire Times, the contenders vying for the esteemed position, alongside Mkaka, include Finance Minister Simplex Chithyola Banda, Treasurer General Albert Mbawala, former Presidential Chief Adviser on Strategy Chris Chaima Banda, and former parliamentarian Alex Major. This formidable lineup sets the stage for a showdown of unprecedented proportions, with each candidate vying for supremacy within the party’s hierarchy.

In response to inquiries, MCP spokesperson Ezekiel Ching’oma clarified that the party has yet to finalize its official list of aspirants, pending the distribution of nomination forms. Once this process is completed, Ching’oma assured that party members will be duly informed, heralding the commencement of what is anticipated to be a riveting contest for political ascendancy.

Ching’oma added that once the process is done, party members would be notified.

“We are yet to come up with nomination papers and once that is done, we are going to open it [the process] up to members. We have also elected a steering committee and that committee will be overseeing these things,” Ching’oma said.

He also said the party has not yet recognised any candidate for the position.

“If anyone is campaigning, it is outside the party; just on social media,” Ching’oma said.

Anticipated contentious contests at the convention are also anticipated for the party’s vice president positions representing the North and South.
