25 students enrolled to Public Universities from Malawi First Lady Charity Initiative SOFF

First Lady Monica Chakwera

Monica Chakwera, First Lady of the Republic of Malawi, leads the Shaping Our Future Foundation (SOFF), a charity dedicated to educating girls in the country. On Wednesday, she expressed her delight in noting that 25 students from the first cohort supported by SOFF have been accepted into various universities across Malawi.

Speaking at the third edition of the girls’ empowerment retreat held at the University of Malawi in Zomba, the First Lady praised the foundation’s achievements. Since its modest inception in 2021, SOFF has made remarkable progress in keeping girls in school, thanks to the support from various organizations.

“Thanks to the unrelenting support from our partners,” Madam Chakwera said.

The First Lady encouraged the girls at the retreat to stay dedicated to their education despite the many challenges they face, sharing her own journey of overcoming a disadvantaged background to pursue education.

The 2024 girls’ empowerment retreat, themed “Funo Langa,” focuses on cyber security, climate change, and financial literacy. This week-long event has been made possible with the support of the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority, the Reserve Bank of Malawi, World Vision, and the Joyce Banda Foundation.
