NEW YORK – In a continued powerful display of bilateral cooperation, the Presidents of Malawi and Mozambique have joined forces to safeguard the Miombo Forests, a critical ecosystem that spans across Southern Africa.
Speaking at the High-Level Dialogue on Miombo Forests in New York, President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi emphasized the vital importance of these woodlands, which sustain the livelihoods of millions.
“The Miombo Forest is not just a natural wonder. It is a vital ecosystem that defines the landscape of our beautiful continent and sustains the livelihoods of millions,” Chakwera stated. He expressed deep concern over the threats facing the Miombo Forests, including illegal logging, deforestation, and unsustainable charcoal production, which are decimating the region’s biodiversity.
Addressing the audience, Chakwera stressed the need for strategic partnerships to find solutions to these challenges. He acknowledged the efforts of organizations like the World Conservation Society, the International Conservation Caucus Foundation, and the Rain Forest Trust in promoting the sustainable management and conservation of the Miombo Forests.
Significantly, Chakwera highlighted the strong friendship between himself and President Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique, pledging to work shoulder-to-shoulder to save the Miombo Forests. “We feel the effects of these crimes as far as Malawi and we stand shoulder to shoulder with Mozambique in doing everything possible to save Miombo Forests,” he said.
The two leaders are committed to implementing the Maputo Declaration on Sustainable Management of Miombo Forests, signed in 2022, and mobilizing resources for research and initiatives that enhance the resilience of these forests against the impacts of climate change.
“Malawi and Mozambique are in this fight to save Miombo Forests together, because that’s what best friends are for,” Chakwera concluded, underscoring the regional unity and determination to protect this invaluable natural treasure.
Meanwhile, the Malawi President attended the official opening of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, today, Tuesday, 24th September, 2024.
