The Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) on Friday announced the death of Karonga Diocese Vicar General, Monsignor Denis Chitete who died on Friday in Lilongwe.
According to a statement written by ECM Secretary General the Very Reverend Father Henry Saindi, Chitete died in Lilongwe where he was receiving medical treatment.
“The Catholic Secretariat of the ECM regrets to announce the death of Monsignor Denis Chitete, Vicar General of the Karonga Diocese.
“Monsignor Chitete has died today December 24 in Lilongwe where he was receiving treatment. Burial arrangements will be announced later,” reads the statement in part.
In an interview, Karonga Diocese Bishop Secretary Father Joseph Moloka Sikwese described the late Chitete as a humble and committed priest who always people to live in peace and harmony.
“Karonga Diocese has lost a very humble and committed priest who was always there resolving conflicts to make sure that people live in peace and harmony. We will miss him,” he said.
In an interview, Karonga District Peace Committee (DPC) secretary Aaron Mwenilupembe described the death of Chitete who until his death was Karonga DPC’s vice chairperson as painful having also lost the Committee’s chairperson Reverend Patricia Mzumara last week.
He said: “As a Committee, we are very shocked and devastated. We have lost leadership and Monsignor Denis Chitete was a key figure and a brain behind the successful mediations the Committee has registered. It will be very difficult to replace the two fallen heroes”.
