President Chakwera’s 2025 win appears inevitable as Mutharika eyes DPP presidency

Mutharika

The main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) president Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has announced that he will contest for the party’s presidency in a convention slated for 27th to 28th December 2023. This is in compliance with the Court order for the party to conduct elective conference within 90 days’ time.

Mutharika announced this in Mangochi during the party’s National Governing Council (NGC) meeting. With this announcement, Mutharika is likely to win the party presidency and therefore that will elevate him as Presidential candidate of the party in 2025.

Therefore, between the incumbent Lazarus Chakwera and Mutharika, the lesser evil for Malawians will continue to be Lazarus Chakwera as surely Mutharika cannot get votes from the North and central region. With 50% plus one formula for getting to state house, Mutharika may fall off on the way which would leave Chakwera with the ability to get 50% plus one with easiness.
