Lilongwe — President Lazarus Chakwera and First Lady Monica Chakwera have joined the global community in mourning the death of Pope Francis, hailing the late pontiff as a towering figure of spiritual leadership and moral clarity in a troubled world.
In a solemn statement issued from the State House, President Chakwera described the Pope as a “remarkable leader whose life embodied faith, compassion, and a tireless pursuit of peace and justice.” The President praised the late Pontiff not only for his unwavering devotion to the spiritual wellbeing of over a billion Catholics, but also for his unrelenting efforts to reform and revitalize the Catholic Church from within.
“Pope Francis will be remembered as a beacon of humility and hope — a man who stood firm in his convictions, even as he championed dialogue, inclusion, and service to the most vulnerable,” the President said.
He noted that the Pope’s global influence transcended religious boundaries, inspiring millions through his message of love and his courageous voice on issues such as climate justice, poverty, and ethical leadership.
Extending condolences to the Vatican, the global Catholic community, and particularly the faithful in Malawi, President Chakwera concluded: “We offer our heartfelt condolences on the passing of a great man. May his soul find eternal rest in the arms of the Almighty.”
