Malawi’s President, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, departed for the United States of America this morning to participate in the US-Africa Business Summit scheduled for May 6 to 7, 2024, in Dallas, Texas.

Speaking at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA), Chakwera emphasized the significance of the summit, noting its potential to facilitate business collaborations between Malawian and American entrepreneurs.

“I am happy that, as a country, we can benefit from American investment just like we already are. I look forward to this summit because I believe that our Agriculture, Tourism and Mining (ATM) Strategy can be boosted by Americans coming over to help us through partnerships,” said Chakwera.

The upcoming US-Africa Business Summit offers more than just a platform for forging partnerships; it serves as a crucial opportunity for Malawi to attract foreign direct investment to bolster its economy, particularly in light of the recent disaster response plan rollout.

President Chakwera’s agenda extends beyond the summit halls; he’ll engage in bilateral discussions with key figures in the US government and business circles. These talks aim to reinforce Malawi-USA collaboration, focusing on economic self-reliance strategies outlined in Malawi 2063.

This vision includes leveraging the ATM Strategy for wealth and job creation, as well as bolstering anti-corruption efforts. The departure of President Chakwera and First Lady Monica Chakwera was marked by the presence of Vice President Dr. Saulosi Chilima, cabinet members, and other high-ranking officials.

Following his time in the USA, Chakwera will make a stop in Nairobi, Kenya, where he’s slated to address the Africa Fertiliser and Soil Summit on May 9 before returning home via Kamuzu International Airport on May 10.
