When a handful of Malawians claim that the government has failed, they’re directly referring to the MCP-led administration within the Tonse Alliance. In essence, they’re asserting that the MCP government has failed. Conversely, when the government succeeds, it’s the government of the day—currently, the MCP—that deserves the credit. For instance, we all acknowledge that the DPP-led government under Bingu Wa Mutharika’s first term performed admirably, even inspiring musician Dan Lu to create the hit song Lozani Zanu.
When we say Chakwera has fixed the electricity issues, we mean the MCP government has delivered. When we say Chakwera is transforming the capital city, it’s the MCP government that’s making it happen. When we say Chakwera has built police houses, again, it’s the MCP government delivering.
Now, when critics claim that the MCP hasn’t delivered, they need to back up their claims. But when the same MCP government showcases its accomplishments, what exactly is wrong with that?
This brings us to the recent criticism of MCP Publicity Secretary Jessie Kabwira, who toured public infrastructure projects to demonstrate what the MCP government has achieved under President Lazarus Chakwera. Some misguided political analysts have absurdly accused Kabwira of crossing into government territory, claiming it violates the separation between party and state. These analysts clearly lack understanding—let them be educated: a government is not separate from the party that forms it. In this case, the MCP runs the Malawi government, and the two are intrinsically linked. So when you criticize the government’s performance, you’re inherently criticizing the MCP’s leadership.
Thus, when the Malawi government, led by MCP officials, chooses to highlight its achievements through its spokesperson Jessie Kabwira, it’s nonsensical to suddenly cry foul about the separation of party and state. Separation since when? Is it because it’s the MCP showing what it has done? Do you want the party to stay silent so you can continue your baseless accusations of failure?
Kabwira’s actions are simply about presenting a narrative supported by facts—showing that Chakwera has indeed delivered. What’s wrong with that? The MCP government’s accomplishments should not be hidden from the public. Jessie Kabwira is doing exactly what she should: informing Malawians about the real progress their government is making. The so-called analysts need to get their facts straight and stop spreading misinformation. Malawians deserve to know the truth about their government’s work, and it’s high time these uninformed critics understood that.
