President Lazarus Chakwera’s re-election bid has received a subtle but powerful boost from the Nkhoma Synod. At the 10th Congregation of Nkhoma University on Friday, the Synod’s Vice Chancellor openly praised Chakwera for his leadership and hinted that the church will stand with him when Malawians go to the polls on September 16, 2025.
The Reverend did not mince words. Thanking Chakwera for gracing the graduation ceremony, he promised that the Synod will “remember him” on his big day — the day of voting. It was a polite but pointed message that the Synod, one of the country’s largest church groupings, is leaning towards endorsing Chakwera for a second term.
According to the Vice Chancellor, Chakwera has proven himself as a leader who champions unity and peace in Malawi — values the church holds dear. His words left many in the audience convinced that the Synod’s voice may quietly but decisively push its faithful towards the MCP leader.
Writing later on his Facebook page, President Chakwera said he was honoured to attend the graduation ceremony, celebrating the achievements of Malawi’s youth and the contribution of the church to education. He reminded the graduates that universal education has deep Christian roots, brought to Malawi through missionaries who built both schools and churches.
Chakwera challenged the graduates to use their knowledge to build a self-reliant Malawi and to give back to their communities, stressing that “to whom much is given, much is expected.”
With the church sending signals of support, analysts say the event was more than just a graduation — it was a political moment that could carry weight in the coming election. For Chakwera, the Synod’s nod may prove to be another vital step towards consolidating his hold on the presidency.
