The Government of the Federal Republic of Germany has agreed to provide Malawi with K140 billion for national development.

This was announced in Lilongwe when Germany and Malawi concluded intergovernmental negotiations which took place virtually on 30 November and 1 December 2023.

Germany Ambassador to Malawi Ute Konig has since reaffirmed her government’s commitment to continue supporting Malawi in various sectors of the economy and cushion Malawians from the effects of devaluation.

“We reconfirm our support of Malawi 2063  and its objective of becoming an inclusively wealthy and self-reliant nation,” Konig said.

Minister of Finance, Simplex Chithyola Banda, described the financial support as timely because the country has been facing a lot of challenges.

“This financial support will among others help us in public finance management and implementation of social cash transfer programme”, said Chithyola-Banda.

The last intergovernmental negotiations between Malawi and Germany were held in 2021.
