Nankhumwa Holds Opposition Throne Amidst Tactical Maneuvering

Nankhumwa:

In a parliamentary address, Speaker of the National Assembly Catherine Gotan Hara affirmed that Honourable Kondwani Nankhumwa retains his position as Leader of the Opposition, despite the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) declaring Mary Navicha as his replacement.

An official legal opinion sought from the Attorney General confirms Nankhumwa’s entitlement to the role, citing an injunction that must be rescinded for Navicha’s recognition as Leader of the Opposition to be valid.

To mollify the DPP’s pride, the Speaker has adjusted the seating arrangement, relocating Nankhumwa while assigning Navicha to his former seat. Legally, Nankhumwa holds the title of Leader of the Opposition.

Thus, governed by the rule of law, Nankhumwa emerges victorious for the time being, as he currently holds both the de jure as well as the de facto position of Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.
