Mtambo dumps AFORD over deal with DPP says blue camp hasn’t changed 

In a strongly worded three-page letter dated July 22 and addressed to party president Enock Chihana, Mtambo said he could not support an alliance with a party he once campaigned hard against during the 2020 elections.

“I find it difficult to tell Malawians to trust the DPP again,” Mtambo wrote. “In 2020, the DPP was voted out because people were tired of corruption, nepotism, abuse of power, and economic decline. What has really changed?”

He argued that forming an alliance with the DPP would go against the principles that Aford stood for during the last elections. “It would be dishonest to go back to Malawians now and ask them to support the same leadership we told them to reject,” Mtambo told us, confirming that he authored the letter.

His absence was notable yesterday when Aford leader Chihana officially unveiled the alliance with the DPP. Chihana downplayed the tension, saying Mtambo was away in Chitipa preparing for upcoming rallies.

However, Mtambo’s letter suggests deep divisions within the party and raises questions about whether the new alliance will hold — or crack under pressure from within.
