The once-iconic Malawi Congress Party (MCP) headquarters, a symbol of the country’s political heritage and Kamuzu Banda’s legacy, now lies in ruins — and furious members are pointing fingers at the party’s Secretary General, Richard Chimwendo Banda, for presiding over what many call a “shameful collapse.”
Malawi’s top lawyer and political commentator, Khumbo Bonzoe Soko, took to Facebook to express his shock after visiting the party’s headquarters in Lilongwe’s City Centre. What he described paints a painful picture of a party that, despite five years in power, failed to care for its own home.
“The perimeter fence is vandalised. Anyone can access the compound from anywhere. The grounds are dry and unkempt, strewn with junk. Even the flags at the front of the building fly in tatters,” wrote Soko.
