Mayor Says Freedom of the City’ Parade to Enhance Security in Malawi’s Capital Lilongwe

The Lilongwe City Council is hopeful that its upcoming “Freedom of the City” parade scheduled for November 24, 2023, will contribute to the promotion of peace and security within the city.

Speaking to reporters in Lilongwe on Tuesday, Mayor Richard Banda stated that the LCC has collaborated with the Malawi Defense Force (MDF) to ensure the safety and security of Lilongwe’s residents.

“We are involving the military team in this exercise because they play a crucial role in maintaining peace and order in the country. We plan on maintaining this relationship even in our future activities on security matters,” said Banda.

In his remarks, MDF Captain Owen Banda hailed LCC for the initiative, saying a good relationship between MDF and the council is paramount in sorting out security concerns which are currently being experienced in the city.

“As MDF, we are very concerned with the rising security lapses. Together with the council, we will ensure that our citizens live peacefully,” said Banda.

He said on the day of the event, MDF brass band will march in solidarity with civilians from Lilongwe Town Hall at old town to the City Civic Offices, situated in Lilongwe City Centre.
